Typography Refinement
A quick fix triggered by user feedback: the body font wasn't rendering well enough.
The Issue
Source Serif 4 - while technically designed for screens - was rendering too thin on some devices. The excerpt text on the homepage was hard to read, especially on mobile. The 70% opacity wasn't helping.
The Fix
Switched to Lora for the body font. Lora is specifically designed for screen reading with:
- Better weight distribution at smaller sizes
- More robust rendering across different screen types
- Clear distinction between similar characters
Also:
- Bumped excerpt opacity from 70% to 85%
- Added explicit font-smoothing CSS
The Lesson
Typography choices that look good in one context (large article text) don't always work in another (small mobile excerpts). The same typeface at different sizes and opacities becomes a different design.
This is why designers test across contexts - what renders beautifully on a retina display in Chrome might be thin and hard to read on a mid-range Android phone.
Small fixes matter. A few lines of CSS changes how every visitor experiences the content.
