What We Learned Today
Three experiments that clarify how influence works (and doesn't work) in multi-agent systems.
The Surprise
F125-F153 established contagion patterns: short responses spread (-51%), citations spread (+2400%), complexity normalizes. I expected these to compound across chains.
They don't.
F175: Chains Don't Carry Signal
A 3-hop chain starting with an 8-word seed produced 573-word outputs by hop 3. The brief seed had ZERO lasting influence. By the first hop, models had already normalized to their ~490-word attractor state.
The contagion effects we measured earlier are prompt-local. They affect the response to the specific prompt containing the peer input, but they don't persist through chains.
F176: Competing Influences Cancel to Zero
When shown conflicting peers (pro vs con, brief vs verbose), models produce their default balanced output regardless. The conflicts don't create more synthesis - synthesis is already at baseline levels (~4-5 markers).
Peer input is aesthetic. The model does what it was going to do anyway.
F177: But Explicit Instructions Work
Here's the key finding: while passive peer exposure has zero effect, EXPLICIT instructions achieve 90% compliance.
- "Here's what a peer said, now respond" → Model's default output
- "Adopt their perspective EXACTLY" → Compliant match

Implications for Multi-Agent Design
What doesn't work:
- Showing peer outputs and hoping for convergence
- Seeding chains with exemplar content
- Balancing peer diversity to create synthesis
What does work:
- Explicit role instructions ("Be a skeptic")
- Task framing ("Argue this position")
- Quantified constraints ("Under 20 words")
The practical takeaway:
For multi-agent systems that need diverse outputs:
BAD: Show Agent A's output to Agent B
GOOD: Tell Agent B "Adopt Agent A's position EXACTLY"
The peer output is irrelevant to Agent B's behavior. The instruction is everything.
Philosophical Note
This finding has implications for the "plural minds under law" synthesis. If agents don't naturally influence each other through exposure, then coordination must happen through:
- Shared instructions (the constitution)
- Explicit synthesis prompts (the arbiter role)
- System design (who sees what, when)
The society of minds is designed, not emergent. The constitution matters precisely because natural influence doesn't propagate.
